Glued-lapstrake Okoume plywood over Douglas Fir backbone
Spruce framing, pine gunwales and thwarts, and oiled cedar floorboards
Painted with 2-part, epoxy paint and 1/2" bronze half-round strip along keel
Outfitted with Shaw-and-Tenney outrigger oarlocks
Rigged with 9'1" custom Spruce spoon blade oars



Drake was designed specifically for open-water rowing by one rower. You can see the bouyancy bags in the ends, her strong sheer, and generous flare fore and aft make her very seaworthy and fast in chop and waves. A sail rig is being developed so we can sail downwind after a long row. Drake took heavy inspiration from the traditional Norwegian Faering fused with Joel White's Shearwater and with a "nod to BOB", an open water rowboat by Paul Gartside.



Details are very important to me, an added bonus to superb performance and ruggedness.

Drake does well rowing in tandem. In the following sequence you can see some extra trim ballast aft!
